The Hitler Youth

The Hitler Youth organisation was, on the face of things, a benign group, which offered a State-run equivalent to that of, say, the Scout movement, which was outlawed by the Nazis. Where it differed, however, was in its actual role. The Hitler Youth existed solely for the indoctrination of German youth and to ultimately prepare them for battle.

They were perhaps the most well-known aspect of the 'Strength Through Joy' movement. This was devised by the Nazis as a means of ensuring the population was passive and accepting of the State as a whole, regardless of its excesses (however extreme) and to foster a culture in society of 'them and us' . The bottom line being, you were either 'in' or you were 'out'. Those deemed to be 'in' (i.e. Party members) were encouraged to excel in their devotion towards the State, and would be rewarded with incentives such as membership of savings schemes to enjoy holidays, which included cruises (the cruise ships were designed with the purpose of easy conversion to hospital and troop ships), car ownership (a scam to raise funds to finance the war), and subsidised fares on Lufthansa.

The Hitler Youth offered young Germans all the trappings that one might expect from a wholesome organisation, such as regular meetings, camping, hiking, comradeship and fund-raising. It also offered (in the guise of all of the normal activities) field craft, marksmanship and indoctrination into the ideals of the new state order. As in all areas of the state, complete unquestioning loyalty was the intended goal. Naturally, given the Nazis' race-hate agenda, all those deemed as degenerate in the eyes of the state were excluded from all of the above. Consequently, when the real face of the new State was unveiled in the form of Kristallnacht and the mass book-burning sessions, it was an enthusiastic population which revelled in the direction that Germany and the already-wider Reich were clearly heading.
