SSBM/CRF Ambulance Driver's Uniform

The SSBM, as discussed on the previous page, provided front line medical facilities. It had a corps of female ambulance drivers whose job it was to ferry battlefield casualties to and from field hospitals, then back to the main hospitals. Women were used for this role, as it did not deplete the manpower required for fighting at the front. There is little actually documented on the role of these drivers during the war and having scoured the available reference books as well as the internet, to date only one actual photograph exists of the SSBM drivers. The uniform presented here is a reproduction based upon the single image we have found in a French publication; providing we can access this image without infringing copyright, then it will be included here for comparison. The armband and insignia are authentic, as is the CRF badge and gas mask.
