Bois de Voncq Hurricane MkI Crashed 14/05/1940

Aircraft: Hawker Hurricane Mk1

Nationality: British

Serial number: P2856

Unit: No 73 Squadron

Call sign: N/K

Date of loss: 14/05/1940

One of five Hurricanes lost by No 73 Squadron this day. This aircraft was shot down in combat with Bf110s of III./ZG26 and crashed into the Bois de Voncq, north of Vouziers, France, at 12.25pm. It is believed that the 24-year old pilot, Sgt Thomas 'Tich' Pyne, baled out of his aircraft, but he was found dead. Originally buried at Voncq French Military Cemetery, Thomas Pyne was later re-interred in Choloy War Cemetery. His father was a former RAF pilot and his brother, Derrick Pyne, was also killed on active service with the RAF, in 1943.

The relics on display here are small pieces of airframe, a radiator hose clip and numerous pieces of perspex from the aircraft's canopy. These items were kindly donated to the museum by Jon Harrisson of Leominster.

Below is a photograph from May 1940 of 'Tich' Pyne with other members of 73 Squadron. Sgt Pyne is third from left in the dark overalls with a map tucked into a below-the-knee pocket. The two central figures in the picture are Squadron Leader J W C "Hank" More (left) and the famous early war ace, Flying Officer E J "Cobber" Kain (right). To the left of Kain, is Pilot Officer VDM Roe who was killed in the same action as Sgt Pyne.
