On a mission to bomb Honington aerodrome, this aircraft was caught in searchlights at 16,000ft. Diving to escape, this aircraft was engaged in a running battle with a Spitfire flown by Flying Officer Petra of No 19 Squadron and a Bristol Blenheim of No 23 Squadron flown by Squadron Leader O'Brien.

The Heinkel was badly damaged and the crew were forced to bale  out, but not before shooting down both of their attackers. The Heinkel crashed at Fleam Dyke, Six Mile Bottom in Cambridgeshire, at 1.15am.
The relics on display from this crash consist of a piece of parachute silk and some fragments of a leather flying helmet.

Crew: Pilot – Fw Wilhelm Maier, Observer - Oberleutnant Joachim von Arnim, Flight Engineer Fw Karl Hauck captured, Radio Operator - Uffz Paul Gersch, killed.
