Junkers Ju88A-1
Nationality: German
Unit: Stab 1/KG54
Serial number: N/K
Call sign: B3 + DB
Date of loss: 13/08/1940
Flying from Germany with extra fuel tanks, this was the lead aircraft in a bomber formation briefed to attack Farnborough aerodrome. The bomber came under heavy attack from Hurricanes of Nos. 43 and 601 squadrons and anti-aircraft fire. The Junkers went into a vertical dive, crashing at high speed and exploding in Phillis Wood, near the village of Treyford in West Sussex. The pilot, Oberleutnant Heinz Ostermann was killed, but the remaining three crew members (Uffz Rossler, Ogefr Brieger and Uffz Seitz) managed to parachute to safety. After the war, Oberleutnant Ostermann's family erected a memorial in his memory close to the remote crash site.

The small fragments of wreckage that have been recovered over the years bear testimony to the violence of the impact and explosion. The few small relics recovered by ourselves and other aviation archaeology groups illustrate the point.
