The 341eme RI

Insignia of the 341eme RI341e Regiment d'Infanterie – Joined the 68th Infantry Division in December, 1939 and was involved in fighting in both the Netherlands and Belgium. Forced to retreat to Dunkirk, the regiment was initially installed in defensive positions between Bergues and Petit Mille Brugghe and finally the area around Spycker at the south-western corner of the perimeter. After a heavy artillery bombardment and infantry attack, the village was lost on the 2nd June 1940, but no further ground was yielded. On the night of the 3rd June the regiment began an orderly retreat back to Dunkirk, destroying equipment and ammunition to prevent this falling into the hands of the Germans. While some soldiers were evacuated, many were left behind.
