05.00 31st May 1940 – Bray Dunes. After rowing for half an hour we reached the paddle steamer Mersey Queen which got underway in about an hour. All rifles and ammunition was collected below. The Mersey Queen was followed all the way to Ramsgate by German planes, one of which was shot down into the sea. Arrived at Ramsgate 11am. I saw one of our party kneel down and kiss the stones of the pier in relief at being back home. I felt great relief myself. Boarded train at Ramsgate station but didn't know where we were going. Cards handed out to send to relatives saying we were safe home. Food and cups of tea handed out – a wonderful reception to a battered army that had failed.
