Junkers 87B
Nationality: German
Unit: 2/ StG77
Serial number: N/K
Call sign: S2 + -K
Date of loss: 18th August, 1940
Believed to have been shot down by a No. 43 Squadron Hurricane flown by Pilot Officer CK Gray while attacking Thorney Island aerodrome. The aircraft came down in flames in a shallow dive, before crashing in a small pasture at Spring Gardens, Cutmill, West Ashling, West Sussex. The crew have been incorrectly identified on the label in the frame, which is not surprising given the heavy losses experienced by StG77 in this action. The crew were, in fact, Leutnant Hans Sinn the pilot and his gunner, Uffz Josef Schmitt. The former parachuted to safety but Uffz Josef Schmitt, already badly wounded, jumped from the blazing aircraft from 100ft, without opening his parachute and he was killed.
The items on display here are a section of the nose of the aircraft which has been painted yellow and two small sections of airframe.
