The Bourbourg Bf 110

Aircraft: Messerschmitt Bf110

Nationality: German

Serial number: N/K

Unit: Stab 1./ZG1

Call sign: N/K

Date of loss: 26/05/1940

One of four aircraft lost by ZG1 while escorting Junkers 88 bombers of KG4 on a mission over the north-eastern coast of France and Belgium.

It is reputed that this particular aircraft was shot down over Calais and crashed in flames at Bourbourg, alongside the road to Gravelines, at 2pm. Local folklore describe the burning aircraft narrowly missing the church, but setting light to it from its leaking fuel load. The pilot, Oberleutnant Martin, was killed and his gunner, Fedwebel Kraft, was captured wounded.

The relics on display here consist of a section of the wing spar and a large piece of airframe.
