When the ARP was first formed they had no uniforms; members wore their standard civilian clothing, relying on armbands and helmets to distinguish them from the wider population. In October 1939, they were issued with blue boiler (or 'siren') suits, which remained the standard clothing until May 1941, when a dark blue serge uniform replaced them. Women were issued with a tunic, skirt and hat, as opposed to the men's shorter battledress-style jacket, trousers and beret.
