The Queen of the Channel at Boulogne



M/V Queen of the Channel I - Built in 1935 as a diesel powered cross-channel steamer, she was owned by the General Steam Navigation Company and used for the Thames excursion trade. She transported 2nd Battalion Irish Guards to Boulogne on the 22nd May, 1940 and on this occasion returned unscathed. However, her luck was not to hold,;she was sunk by air attack on the 28th May during Operation Dynamo, but before she finally sank, the vast bulk of the crew and the 950 soldiers on board were successfully transferred to the nearby coaster "Dorrien Rose" and taken to Dover.
